After consultation with the Presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly, the Secretary-General of the United Nations appointed on 6 August 1996 Mr. Justice Saad Saood JAN, from Pakistan, as a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
Mr. Justice Saad Saood JAN will serve the remainder of the term of office of Judge Rustam SIDHWA (also from Pakistan), who has resigned for reasons of health.
Biographical note of Judge Jan
Judge Jan (born 1931, in Lahore) has held numerous governmental posts, including Joint Secretary in the Government of Pakistan's Ministry of Law, and Secretary to the Government of Pakistan's Parliamentary Affairs Division for preparation of the constitution.
Judge Jan has also had a distinguished judicial career, including service on the Lahore High Court. In 1986, he was appointed to Pakistan's Supreme Court. He has twice acted as Pakistan's Chief Justice.
Judge Jan is a member of the National Group of the Hague Permanent Court of Arbitration.
Until his recent retirement he was the most senior Judge in Pakistan.
