Mr. Riad appointed at the Tribunal in replacement of Judge Abi-Saab

After consultation with the Presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly, the Secretary-General of the United Nations has appointed today Mr. Fouad Abdel-Moneim RIAD, as a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

>Mr. Fouad RIAD, from Egypt, will serve the remainder of the term of office of Mr. Georges ABI-SAAB, also from Egypt, who was a Judge of the Tribunal since 17 November 1993 and who resigns in order to resume his academic activities.

>Biographical note of Judge Riad

>Judge Riad (born in 1928, in Caïro) has a long career as Professor of Law at Cairo University; he also taught at New York, Paris, and The Hague. Judge Riad has published a number of books and articles in Arabic, English, and French. He has also been active as Arbitrator and International legal consultant.

>In 1977 and 1978, he chaired the Plenary Committee of the UN Conference on State Succession to Treaties.

>He is a member of the Institut de droit international, and served from 1993 to 1995 as Vice-President. Since 1990, he is the President of the Egyptian Society of International Law.
