OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTOR
BUREAU DU PROCUREUR

CC/PIU/307-E

The Hague, 31 March 1998

THE OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTOR WELCOMES A MAJOR BRITISH DONATION FOR THE 1998 EXHUMATIONS PROGRAMME

Canada and Denmark also contribute to this project

which is due to commence shortly

Responding to an appeal for funds made by the Office of the Prosecutor in November 1997, and again in February 1998, the Government of the United Kingdom has made a major donation of $2,000,000 USD to the United Nations Voluntary Fund to enable the Prosecutor to carry out the full programme of mass grave exhumations in the former Yugoslavia.

The project has now been fully funded and is due to commence shortly.

In addition to the contribution from the United Kingdom, the Government of Canada ($281,858 USD) and the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark ($30,329 USD) have made contributions to this year’s project.

The exhumations programme of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia began in 1996 and is carried out primarily to obtain corroborating evidence for the Prosecution cases for the trials in The Hague. Exhumations are costly and in addition to the cash contributions, scores of individuals volunteer their time to take part in the work. Without voluntary
contributions, the programme would not take place.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia as a whole and the Office of the Prosecutor in particular express their gratitude to the states who have contributed to the exhumations work and commend their generosity.
