Outreach Programme launches series of lectures in universities in Kosovo
The Tribunal’s Outreach Programme launched yesterday a series of university lectures in Kosovo marking the final phase of its region-wide project to reach out to students across the former Yugoslavia.
A total of four lectures will be held this week at JURIDICA Kosova Law Faculty, the Faculties of Philosophy and Law of the University of Pristina, and the University of Prizren Law Faculty. The lectures will be given by Wayde Pittman, Senior Legal Officer within Chambers at the ICTY.
Commenting on the value of lectures, Veton Vula, Professor of Law at the Institute JURIDICA Kosova, said: “thanks to this lecture held at the Law Clinic of Institute JURIDICA, our students have become acquainted with the procedures of the Hague Tribunal in general, and with major crimes such as genocide and crimes against humanity in particular. With this lecture students have received basic knowledge about international institutions, and the arrest and prosecution of those who committed genocide or other criminal acts against humanity.”
This follows similar lecture series which have been completed in Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The university lectures series form part of the Outreach Programme’s efforts to contribute to the process of dealing with the past by encouraging young people to take an active interest in the Tribunal’s work and achievements as well as wider issues of justice, transitional justice mechanisms and post-conflict social recovery.
As the ICTY moves towards the completion of its mandate, the Outreach Programme is intensifying its efforts to increase the access of local communities to information on the Tribunal’s work. In doing so, the Outreach Programme seeks to cement the Tribunal’s legacy throughout the region of the former Yugoslavia.
The Outreach Programme benefits from the continuous support of the European Union and its work with the youth of the former Yugoslavia is generously supported by the Finnish government.
More information about the Outreach Programme can be found on the Tribunal’s website.
