Outreach Programme launches series of university lectures across the former Yugoslavia

Today, the Tribunal’s Outreach Programme launched a region-wide project to reach out to university students across the former Yugoslavia with the first round of presentations taking place in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

This week, students in law, political science and security studies from four universities in the capital Skopje and the cities of Struga and Gostivar will attend lectures to be given by John Cubbon, Senior Legal Officer in the Tribunal’s Chambers. He will introduce students to the work of the Tribunal, its jurisprudence and its impact on the development of the rule of law in the former Yugoslavia.

Commenting on the value of the presentations, Sefer Canoski, Vice-President of the Faculty of Social Science (FON) in Skopje, said: “As an open academic platform, FON University is always prepared to provide its students with supplementary academic lectures by practitioners from the field, which enrich their academic curriculum. Thanks to the lectures, which are provided by experts from the ICTY, Macedonian students will have the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of the principles of international law, which will be extremely important for their further development as young professionals.”

Similar presentations will be held in the coming weeks and months in universities across Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo.

This project forms part of the Outreach Programme’s efforts to contribute to the process of dealing with the past by encouraging young people to take an active interest in the Tribunal’s work and achievements as well as wider issues of justice, transitional justice mechanisms and post-conflict social recovery.

As the ICTY moves towards the completion of its mandate, the Outreach Programme is intensifying its efforts to increase the local communities’ access to information on the Tribunal’s work. In doing so, the Outreach Programme seeks to cement the Tribunal’s legacy throughout the region of the former Yugoslavia.

The Outreach Programme benefits from the continuous support of the European Union and its work with the youth of the former Yugoslavia is generously supported by the Finnish government.

More information about the Outreach Programme can be found on the Tribunal’s website.
