President Robinson to Visit Former Yugoslavia

Judge Patrick Robinson today begins his first official visit to the region of the former Yugoslavia since being elected as the Tribunal’s President. He will be in the region from 12 to 17 June, traveling to Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia.

President Robinson will meet with government officials, representatives of the local judiciary and victims’ associations. Matters to be discussed include the region’s cooperation with the ICTY, as well as issues related to the Tribunal’s legacy and strengthening the capacity of the local judiciaries to handle war crimes cases.

In Zagreb on 12 June, the President will meet with the Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and the President of the Supreme Court Branko Hrvatin. He will then travel to Dubrovnik to deliver a keynote speech at a conference looking at the Impact of the Tribunal on the states of the former Yugoslavia. He will also meet there with Croatian Minister of Justice Ivan Šimonović.

The President will be in Sarajevo from 14 to 16 June, where he will meet with BiH Presidency members, the High Representative Valentin Inzko, and the Mayor of Sarajevo Alija Behmen. He will also pay an official visit to the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina and meet with representatives of victims’ associations.
 
On 15 June, he will deliver the opening speech at a conference organized by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (“UNICRI”) and the Tribunal, where the translation of the ICTY Manual on Developed Practices into the languages of the region will be launched.

The President will pay a short visit to Ljubljana, where he will meet with President Danilo Türk and Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Žbogar. The President is also expected to visit Serbia in the coming months.
