Prosecutor Louise Arbour warns against forged document being circulated in Eastern Slavonia.

In the afternoon of Thursday 14 August, the Prosecutor was contacted by the UN Transitional Administrator for Eastern Slavonia and was made aware of a letter which has been circulated in the UNTAES region purportedly issued from the Prosecutor and the Registrar to the UN Civilian Police Commissioner in Vukovar. This letter includes a request for information on 178 individuals who are described as being the subject of criminal proceedings within the Tribunal. UNTAES has forwarded a copy of this letter to the Prosecutor, and she has now had an opportunity to examine it.

The Prosecutor, Justice Louise Arbour, states emphatically that this document did not originate from her office or from anyone within the Tribunal. It is a complete fabrication, and absolutely no credence should be attributed to it.

It is the intention of the Prosecutor to immediately initiate an investigation in order to identify the source of this letter, and to take appropriate steps in regard to the perpetrators of this fraudulent act. Accordingly, in order to further this investigation, the Prosecutor would ask that anyone who has received a copy of this letter should provide the document and the envelope in which it was received to the offices of UNTAES in Vukovar.
