Tribunal’s Outreach Programme launches series of high school presentations in Croatia

The Tribunal’s Outreach Programme today launched a round of presentations at high schools in Croatia for this school year and held its first presentation at the 10th Gymnasium “Ivan Supek” in Zagreb.

Through this region-wide project, launched on 14 December 2011 in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tribunal is seeking to support the process of reconciliation in the region by encouraging young people to take an active interest in the Tribunal’s work and achievements as well as wider issues of justice, transitional justice mechanisms and post-conflict social recovery.

Commenting on the value of the presentations, Roksanda Smolčić – Krnić Director of X.Gimnazija "Ivan Supek" in Zagreb said: “The presentation on the ICTY will help students to better understand the work and mandate of the Tribunal, and gain additional knowledge about the importance of the rule of law and prosecution of perpetrators of war crimes.”

The multi-media presentations will introduce students from 15 high schools to the work of the Tribunal and its achievements in bringing to justice those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s. The students will learn about the cases relating to Croatia that have been completed before the Tribunal, the way in which they have contributed to the establishment of facts as well as the influence the ICTY has had on the development of the rule of law in the region.

As the ICTY moves towards the completion of its mandate, the Outreach Programme is intensifying its efforts to increase the local communities’ access to information on the Tribunal’s work. In doing so, the Outreach Programme seeks to cement the Tribunal’s legacy throughout the region of the former Yugoslavia.

The Outreach Programme benefits from the continuous support of the European Union and its work with the youth of the former Yugoslavia is generously supported by the Finnish government.
