Tribunal’s Outreach Programme launches series of high school presentations in Kosovo
The Tribunal’s Outreach Programme today launched a new round of presentations at high schools in Kosovo for the 2011 – 2012 school year and held its first presentation at the Economic and Law High School "H.K. Prishtina" in Pristina.
Through this region-wide project, launched on 14 December in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tribunal is seeking to support the process of reconciliation in the region by encouraging young people to take an active interest in issues of justice, transitional justice mechanisms, post-conflict social recovery and the ICTY’s mission.
Commenting on the value of the presentations, Jahë Sahiti, School Principal at H.K. Prishtina, said: “The lectures will enable students to become familiar with the functioning, role, objective and importance of the Tribunal. They will contribute to their understanding of the Tribunal’s achievements and the facts established in the course of the trials.”
The multi-media presentations will introduce students from 15 high schools to the Tribunal and its achievements in bringing to justice those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s. The students will learn about the cases relating to Kosovo that have been completed before the Tribunal, the way in which they have contributed to the establishment of facts as well as the wider influence the ICTY has had on the development of the rule of law in the region.
This is the fourth round of high school presentations to take place in Kosovo. Previous presentation series were successfully held between 2006 and 2010. Over 1700 students from over 40 high schools across Kosovo learned about the Tribunal’s work within the context of their own region.
As the ICTY moves towards the completion of its mandate, the Outreach Programme is intensifying its efforts to increase the access of local communities, including young people to information on the Tribunal’s achievements. In doing so, the Outreach Programme seeks to promote a greater understanding of the Tribunal’s work and to cement its legacy throughout the region of the former Yugoslavia.
The Outreach Programme benefits from the continuous support of the European Union and its work with young people is generously supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.
