The United Nations Security Council issued today Resolution 1775 (2007) extending the mandate of Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte until 31 December 2007.
In its Resolution, the Security Council considered "the request of the Secretary-General to extend the appointment of Ms. Del Ponte from 15 September 2007 to 31 December 2007" and noted "the need to ensure a smooth transition between the departure of Ms. Carla Del Ponte and the assumption of office of her successor".
Carla Del Ponte was appointed Prosecutor for both the ICTY and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) on 11 August 1999 and her first mandate officially began on 15 September 1999. On 4 September 2003, the Security Council reappointed Carla Del Ponte to her position at the ICTY, with effect from 15 September 2003. She is the third Prosecutor of the ICTY, following Justice Richard Goldstone of South Africa, who served between July 1994 and September 1996, and Justice Louise Arbour of Canada, who served between October 1996 and September 1999. The successor to the current prosecutor has not been appointed yet.
