ALEKSOVSKI CASE:

DEFENDANT REQUESTS THAT

A TRIAL DATE BE SET

On Thursday 27 November 1997, Mr Goran Mikulicic, Defence Counsel for Zlatko ALEKSOVSKI, filed a motion "to set a date for the trial".

The Defence Counsel refers to a Status Conference held behind closed doors on 6 June during which the Parties and the Trial Chamber allegedly agreed that the trial date would be set "in a period of two months once all preliminary motions have been ruled on".

The defendant’s Motion is also based upon "the fundamental right of the Accused to be tried without undue delay as well as [on] the obligation of the Trial Chamber to ensure that a trial has to be fair and expeditious".

Background information

No Decision will be made until the Prosecution has responded to the Defendant’s Motion. The Prosecutor’s Response is expected within two weeks.

The Aleksovski Case is handled by Trial Chamber I-bis, consisting of Judge Rodrigues (presiding), Judge Vohrah and Judge Nieto Navia (see Press release 265).
