DUSKO SIKIRICA AND DAMIR DOSEN TRANSFERRED TO AUSTRIA TO SERVE PRISON SENTENCE


Today, 10 May 2002, Dusko Sikirica and Damir Dosen were transferred to Austria to serve their sentence as handed down by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).


On 13 November 2001 Dusko Sikirica and Damir Dosen were convicted to 15 years imprisonment and 5 years imprisonment respectively. Both have entered guilty pleas to one count of persecution, a crime against humanity, committed at the Keraterm Camp (see Press Release 635-e).


Austria is one of the seven United Nations Member States which entered into an Enforcement of Sentences Agreement with the Tribunal on 23 July 1999. (see Press Release 421-e). The other countries are Italy (signed on 6 February 1997), Finland (7 May 1997), Norway (24 April 1998), Sweden (23 February 1999), France (25 February 2000) and Spain (28 March 2000).


It is the first time that Austria, in line with its overall support to the ICTY, imprisons persons convicted by the Tribunal.
