The Hague, 15 December 2006

SF/MOW/1135e

The Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Justice, Lidiya Horbunova, met yesterday with the Tribunal's Registrar, Hans Holthuis, to discuss issues relating to the enforcement of prison sentences for persons found guilty and sentenced to a term of imprisonment by the Tribunal.

Consultations between the parties focused on finalising the text of the draft agreement for the enforcement of sentences between the United Nations and Ukraine.

The Tribunal expresses its appreciation for the visit of the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Justice, and for Ukraine's willingness to support its activities in general and more specifically the enforcement of sentences pronounced by the Tribunal.

The Tribunal's Detention Unit is a remand centre only, located in a Dutch prison complex. The accused are detained in this facility on the presumption of innocence during or awaiting trial. If an accused is sentenced to a term of imprisonment, then the Tribunal will transfer the accused to serve the sentence in a state that holds an agreement with the Tribunal. The Tribunal
currently has agreements with 10 states.
