ICTY Celebrates One Year of its New Website

Since its new version was launched 10 December 2008, the ICTY Website has established itself as an unprecedented communication step in the field of international criminal justice.

Available in five languages, including those of the former Yugoslavia, the site provides information about the Tribunal's history, achievements and ongoing work. With over 3.5 million page views, our readers range from legal experts and diplomats to the ordinary people and communities most affected by the conflicts and crimes that took place in the former Yugoslavia beginning in 1991.

Over the last year, the ICTY added a number of new features to the site to strengthen its role as a source of information, and to reach each of these audiences better. The new features include a map on the global spread of international justice, a virtual tour inside Courtroom I, and a database allowing access to all press releases published for every ICTY case since 1994.

Another significant addition is the ICTY Court Records, a complete multi-lingual and searchable database of all public filings from all the Tribunal’s cases. This database already contains over 180,000 documents, and new material is added daily. With such a large volume of significant materials, the website will be crucial to the Tribunal’s legacy for audiences around the globe.

A special page on witness statistics allows readers to learn and discover more about the over 5,000 witnesses who have testified before the Tribunal. These ordinary men and women, simply by speaking out, play a pivotal role in the work of the ICTY. The Voice of the Victims section has been enriched with more stories and videos, to reveal how people from all walks of lif e were victims of horrific crimes.

The website is essential to the Tribunal’s outreach work. New pages spotlight the groundbreaking Bridging the Gap series of events, where ICTY professionals had the opportunity to describe the Tribunal’s work directly to those most affected by the very crimes that the Tribunal seeks to redress.

The site is a living tool, and so many other features will continue being prepared, to support the Tribunal’s principles of judicial transparency and accountability. The Tribunal’s website will convey these principles to the largest number of people across the world, to ensure that the Tribunal’s legacy will be one of peace, justice and the rule of law in the former Yugoslavia and beyond.
