President and Prosecutor of the ICTY mandate the Registrar to travel to Belgrade

Judge Claude Jorda, President of the International Criminal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and Carla Del Ponte, Prosecutor, welcome the arrest of Slobodan Milosevic.

Both see it as a positive development, in the spirit of the constructive exchanges which took place during the recent visit by the Ministers of Justice of Serbia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The President and the Prosecutor are confident that the arrest and detention of Slobodan Milosevic will make it possible for the Belgrade authorities to fully comply with their obligations under international law, including the transfer to The Hague of Slobodan Milosevic, and other persons indicted by the International Tribunal.

To this end, the President and the Prosecutor request the Yugoslav authorities to serve Slobodan Milosevic with the arrest warrant re-issued on 23 January 2001 on the basis of his indictment on 24 May 1999 for crimes against humanity, including murder, persecution and deportation, and violations of the laws or customs of war.

Concretely, the President and the Prosecutor have mandated the Registrar to travel as soon as possible to Belgrade in order to remind the authorities of Serbia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia of the practical modalities of their obligations pursuant to inter alia Rules 56 and 57 of the Tribunal’s Rules of Procedure and Evidence. Moreover, the Registrar will request a copy of the indictment against Slobodan Milosevic by the national legal authorities, as well as all other useful information.
